This past September I had the opportunity to travel to Ireland and fulfill a Bucket List wish of seeing the prehistoric mounds in the Boyne Valley, specifically the great mound of Knowth. Knowth is a passage tomb that was built appropriately around 3200 BCE and contains a rich variety of megalithic art. Among the symbols found there (including the oldest known illustration of the moon!) is the triskele.
While we don't know exactly what the symbol meant to the Neolithic cultures of that time, it has an enduring legacy and has passed down over the centuries. It's quite something to see the patterns on the kerbstones on the mounds, and to realize you're looking at something that human hands-just like yours-carved nearly 5000 years ago.
I made this soap to honor the day I had the privilege of visiting the mounds. It's been scented with a mixture of night jasmine, orchid dew, fern, gardenia, ylang ylang, moss, and a touch of musk to represent the beautiful tree-lined walkways and grassy grounds of the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre
